Anti-dumping levy on electronic component imports urged

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 2 Unrestricted import and zero customs duty on electronic hardware and component are heavily impacting local electronics industry.

The Electronic Industries Association of India has called for an anti-dumping duty on imported component to save local industry from losses.

The association pointed out that colour picture tube is being allowed for import at zero duty under the Thai Free Trade Agreement.

“The indigenous CPT (colour picture tube) industry has been the victim of aggressive dumping from China and other Asian countries, as a result of which it has been seriously damaged and two of the four manufacturers — Hotline and BPL Display Devices — have been forced to shut down operations. The remaining two, Samtel and JCT, have been suffering due to imports at unrealistically low prices. The production too has come down from 20 million to about 15 million units,” the association president Mr A.G. Rohira said in a release.

The issue of unfair practices and dumping of colour picture tubes has been studied in depth by the Designated Authority on Anti-Dumping in the Ministry of Commerce and as per its preliminary findings released on May 7, there is conclusive evidence of unfair pricing of imports and damage to domestic industry, it said.
