Education States - Andhra Pradesh Focus more on research, Kalam tells varsities Our Bureau Hyderabad, July 3 Universities should focus more on research, which will automatically lead to quality in teaching, according to the former President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Speaking after inaugurating MBA in health care and hospital management and a workshop on trauma and pain management at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) here, Dr Kalam said the top universities in the world achieve excellence by taking up innovative research projects. “During the last nine months, I have visited 19 leading universities in the world, including 10 in the US and six in Europe. I found all these universities concentrated on research driven by innovation,” he said. The higher research content in universities would improve quality of teaching, he observed. Citing the example of Nobel Laureate Dr C.V. Raman, who skipped the investiture ceremony of ‘Bharat Ratna’ to help a student to submit his Ph D thesis, Dr Kalam advised the teaching community and students to recognise the value of science. The youngsters should make a difference by ensuring the development of agriculture and food processing, energy, education and health sectors, he added. Prof S.E. Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor UoH, said the university was rated the best in the country in scientific research by the Cumulative Quality Index (CQI) which was prepared on the basis of citation analysis.
