Shipping Container traffic grows by 19%
Indian ports have to gear up to handle more boxes. In 2007-08, the growth of container traffic in Indian ports was more than 19 per cent at a throughput of 6.7 million TEUs and, at this rate, it is estimated that the throughput will reach 21 million TEUs by 2016. Which means, India has to add substantially to its container handling capacity in ports. In first quarter of the current fiscal (April-June 2008-09), the container throughput in Indian ports was 1,056,556 TEUs compared with 9,41,829 TEUs in the same period of 2007 -08, thus posting 12.18 per cent growth. Side by side, in November 2007, Chinese ports broke through the 100-million-TEU mark and it took China only three years to enhance its container throughput to 100 million TEUs from 50 million TEUs. By 2015, Chinese ports are projected to handle close to 200 million TEUs. In the first half of the current year (January to June, 2008), the sea ports of China handled 56.98 million TEUs, registering an increase of 16.6 per cent over the same period of last year. During the same period, the Chinese river ports handled 4.67 million TEUs, up 23.1 per cent. OUR BUREAU More Stories on : Shipping
