Demand for feeder vessels

According to a few in the shipping industry, it may be a boom time for feeder vessel newbuildings. The emergence of more and more mega container carriers on the international trade routes, as it is pointed out, would trigger a boom in the demand for feeder vessels. The mega carriers, because of their huge size, will not be able to call at most ports of the world; but, only at a limited number of ports. With the result, the number of feeder ports will increase and, with it, there will be a rise in the feeder services. According to one estimate, the jump in demand for feeder vessels will be particularly visible in the next two to three years, more so because of the age profile of the existing tonnage compared to the amount of contracting today. The ship-owners, it is felt, will be trying to place orders, most probably all at the same time. Perhaps they should be doing it right now. But the big question is: when will these orders begin to roll in and when will the vessels be delivered? After all, it will take some years to execute the orders.- OUR BUREAU
