Infrastructure Protest over EC's restrictions Truckers, freight forwards and shippers bristle at European Commission's green scheme. Reports published in British International Freight Association newsletter suggest that the new European Commission scheme to reduce truck pollution has evoked sharp reaction from forwarders, truckers and shippers. Protesting the EC's new restrictions, an official of International Road Transport has pointed out that the road transport industry has cut down on fuel consumption by more than 35 per cent since 1970 and toxic emission by 97 per cent and the suggestion for further cutback is not realistic. The package on "green transport", it is felt, falls short of innovative thinking. It will make transportation of goods by road more expensive with little environmental improvement. Since the 2001 White Paper, EC has proposed pricing instruments or capping to curb transport growth, which European Freight Forwarders' Association, European Shippers Council and International Road Transport oppose, arguing that internalising costs through pricing, as EC proposes, will not be enough to achieve environmental benefits from higher charges. - OUR BUREAU More Stories on : Infrastructure | Environment
