The Andhra Pradesh Trade Promotion Corporation (APTPC) is looking at converting the cargo station at the old airport at Begumpet into a container hub.

“Since the old airport is no longer functional, we intend to convert the cargo station there into a container station for which we are awaiting customs clearance,” Ms J. Geeta Reddy, the Minister for Major Industries, said while addressing a press conference.

The Minister also said they are planning to create a cargo hub at the Tirupati airport and make it similar to the one that APTPC has in Visakhapatnam.

Ms Reddy was speaking to the media after inaugurating the corporation’s paper products complex at Mamidipally village, in Maheshwaram Mandal, Ranga Reddy district.

The complex has been built over 2.5 acres at a cost of Rs 3 crore. The paper products division was earlier located in a dilapidated building at Lakdikapul.

The corporation will also set up trade centres in other cities and towns across the State. Initially, these centres are expected to come up at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Warangal and Tirupati.

Ms Reddy said the complex would be used for storing raw material, like paper, and finished products, like notebooks.

The Corporation, she said, this year recorded a turnover of Rs 27 crore, as against the Rs 22 crore in 2007-08. “This is expected to go up by another five to 10 per cent during the remaining months of the current financial year because of supplementary income,” she said.
