Hyderabad, Aug. 3

The US Consulate in the city will start functioning in a phased manner from December.

The US Consul-General, Hyderabad, Mr Cornelis M. Keur, made this announcement after meeting the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here.

A press release from the Chief Minister’s Office said Mr Keur briefed Dr Reddy about the progress of the Consulate work.

Mr Keur said he liked India and its people right from the days when he was first posted (here) in 1979. He added that the present posting as the Consul-General here would be his last.

Expressing his desire to settle down in the city after retirement, Mr Keur said Hyderabad is developing fast and attracting many multinational companies.

The Chief Minister assured him of all support from the State Government to start the Consulate.

Dr Reddy said opening of the Consulate would be beneficial to Andhra Pradesh and the US.

Telugu was the most spoken foreign language in places like California, said the Chief Minister.

The State Government has provided Paigah Plaza as the temporary accommodation to the Consulate, which will soon have a permanent building near Hitec City.
