Monsoon active over coastal AP, Telangana

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 4 Sunday’s ‘low’ over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has moved in a west-northwest direction and lay over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Orissa coasts.

The drought-stricken Met subdivisions of Marathawada, madhya Maharashtra, north interior Karnataka, Telangana, Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh are all tipped to receive welcome showers for a second a round during the ongoing monsoon revival phase.

And prospects of a third round set to begin around the weekend just got a major boost with India Meteorological Department (IMD) too joining the watch for the anchor weather system, a third ‘low’ in the current series, taking shape in the Bay.

Early signals point towards the possibility of strong monsoon flows throwing up a counterpart ‘low’ over northeast Arabian Sea off the Konkan-Mumbai-South Gujarat coasts as the session progresses. This belt could well be bracing to witness heavy to very heavy showers during the week ending August 11.

VIGOROUS MONSOON

Meanwhile, the prevailing ‘low’ in the Bay has already set off vigorous monsoon conditions over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with prospects of more rain and its westward movement into adjoining Maharashtra.

Towards the west of the peninsula, however, the offshore trough along the Maharashtra-Kerala coasts was instrumental in fetching rains for coastal Karnataka and interior Maharashtra, as per the IMD update.

During the 24 hours ending Monday, rainfall occurred at most places over Telangana and coastal Karnataka; at many places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and interior Karnataka; and at a few places over Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu.

Forecasts for the next three days said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Karnataka and north coastal Andhra Pradesh; at many places over Telangana, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Kerala; and at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep.

An IMD warning said isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Telangana, north coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Karnataka during the next 48 hours.

Isolated heavy rain is also likely to occur over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and interior Karnataka during the same period.

TO SHIFT WEST

Subsequently, the rainfall belt is likely to shift to over north Maharashtra.

On Monday, the trough passed through Anupgarh, Sikar, Shivpuri, Raipur, the centre of the ‘low’, and then into the southeast Bay.

Over the Maharashtra-Gujarat region, the monsoon was active over Saurashtra-Kutch during the 24 hours ending Monday morning.

Rainfall occurred at many places over Konkan-Goa, south madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada and Gujarat while it was isolated places over north madhya Maharashtra.

Forecast for the next three days said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Marathawada; at many places over Konkan-Goa, madhya Maharashtra, the south Gujarat region and Saurashtra; and at a few places over north Gujarat and Kutch.

Elsewhere in the country, rain and thundershowers have been forecast for many places over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and the North-East.

Rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over south Orissa through Tuesday and decrease, thereafter.

Rain or thundershowers are also likely at many places over west Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Punjab.

Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over the rest of the northwest, an IMD update said.
