Sikkim’s efforts to make tourism a sustainable industry are bearing fruit with awards coming in at state and local levels. A press release issued recently by the State Tourism Department said that Sikkim has been selected as the Emerging Tourism State of 2008 and would be awarded the Today’s Traveller Platinum Award at a ceremony to be held at New Delhi on August 25. In 2007, Today’s Traveller had described Sikkim as the most picturesque destination. On J uly 3, the Hee-Bermiok Tourism Development and Heritage Conservation Society, West Sikkim, was bestowed with the CNBC Awaaz Travel Awards, 2008, for “Best Example of Community Based Tourism”.
