NMPT registers 59 % growth in box traffic

Mangalore, Aug. 4

The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has registered a growth of 59.61 per cent in container handling in the first four months of the current fiscal.

Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, said that the port handled 10,338 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in the first four months of the current financial year as against 6,477 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous year.

He attributed this growth to the calling of more mainline container vessels at the port and to the increased frequency of feeder vessels to the port. More facilities have been provided at the port for handling container cargo, he added.
