Railways Industry & Economy - Urban Development States - Andhra Pradesh Integrated traffic plan for Hyderabad Metro Rail project Our Bureau Hyderabad, Aug. 5 With the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet giving formal approval to Nava Bharat-Maytas consortium to build the Rs 12,000-crore Hyderabad Metro Rail project, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is preparing an integrated traffic management plan to ensure smooth flow of traffic once works start. Works on the prestigious project are scheduled to start in October on the 71-km project that would have three lanes. “Acquisition of the land required for the 30-km Miyapur-LB Nagar stretch has already been completed,” Mr N.V.S. Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMR), the exclusive agency set up by the company to oversee the project, said. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said acquisition on the other two stretches were half way through. Admitting to the fact that the commuters would have to bear with some inconvenience during the construction phase, he said there was no other go for the city, keeping in mind the growing traffic. Dr C.V.S.K. Sarma, Commissioner of GHMC and Chairman of HMR, said there should be a scientific plan, particularly at key junctions, to ensure smooth flow of traffic during the construction phase. Reminding the problems faced by cities like Bangkok in the South-East that forced it to look at the metro option, he said a number of cities in the West had planned metro projects once they crossed a population of one million, Mr Reddy said.
