Bengal hopeful of Nano rollout schedule

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Aug. 5 The West Bengal Government is hopeful that the first batch of the Tata Nano will roll out from the Singur factory as scheduled later this year.

Asked whether work on the project site was affected after the Trinamool Congress, led by its leader Ms Mamata Banerjee, demanded that 400 acres be returned to those who had not accepted their compensation cheques, Mr Nirupam Sen, Minister for Industries & Commerce, said the State Government had no such information.

“The State Government has no such information. When the Tata Motors Managing Director, Mr Ravi Kant, met me last time, he told me that 75 per cent of the work on the project had been completed. More work must have been completed since then,” Mr Sen said.

On whether the State Government was in a position to give 400 acres elsewhere to those who had not accepted the compensation cheques, he said: “The State Government does not have that much land. If we are to do so, the State Government will again have to acquire land.”
