New Delhi, Aug 5 Calling for increased investment in food processing sector, the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Mr Subodh Kant Sahai, said the time was right since demand was also growing in a sector that was “virtually taxless”.

He was speaking at a seminar on ‘Food Safety and Quality in Kitchens’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries.

Eating out

“Eating out has become an inseparable fact of city life today-driven by the imperatives of urban lifestyles, occupational demands and consumer convenience,” said the Minister.

This year, 2008-09, has been declared the “Food Safety and Quality Year.” Mr Sahai said a scheme to help street food vendors upgrade hygiene and quality of street food would be launched soon.

Stating that the food processing could do to rural India, what IT has done for urban India, Mr Piruz Khambatta, Chairman, CII Food Processing Committee, said there was an increasing need to provide greater assurance on food safety and quality to consumers.

Mr Khambatta cited a recent World Health organisation report that says 9.1 per cent of global burden of diseases could be prevented by promoting cleanliness, safety and sanitation.

Mr Rahul Sarin, Secretary, Minister Food Processing Industry, and Dr Gavin Wall, Food and Agriculture Organisation’s India representative also spoke at the event.
