Chennai transport corpn to induct 1,000 more buses

Chennai, Aug. 5 Chennai will soon have a thousand more public buses.

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will induct 1,000 more buses, at a cost of Rs 188 crore, to its fleet during the current financial year. This will take the total fleet strength to 4,093 before next March.

Delivering the inaugural address of Consumer Club of MOP Vaishnav College for Women, the Managing Director of MTC, Mr M. Ramasubramanian, said of the 1,000 buses significant number would be deluxe buses and these would augment the service buses (non-stand-by) to 3,825. At present it has 2,825 service buses including 490 buses deluxe and ten Volvo buses.

MTC will also induct 20 Volvo buses in couple of months.

As part of its efforts in tracking buses, MTC would introduce GPS systems in 500 more buses next year at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. At present, the system, fitted on to 55 buses, helps MTC in tracking and establishing inter-vehicle communication to coordinate movement during bus operations.
