Mamuni Das New Delhi, Aug 7 Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) will soon sign an agreement with South Korean shipyard STX to acquire four panamax bulk carriers for $238.2 million. The deliveries of all four vessels are expected in about 2012, according to sources in the know. The public sector unit recently received the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) nod for acquiring four panamax bulk carriers of about 80,000 dead weight tonnes (dwt) each at a price of $59.55 million. SCI plans to raise up to 80 per cent of the contract price of each vessel from the domestic or international market while the balance amount would be paid from its internal resources. The public sector unit currently has 28 vessels on order, deliveries of which will start this year and areexpected to be complete over the next few years. The vessels on order are: Two very large crude oil carriers (VLCC) of 3,19,000 dwt from South Korean firm Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering; six LR-I product tankers of 73,000 dwt from South Korea’s STX Shipbuilding; two 4,400 teus (20-foot equivalent units) cellular container vessels from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, two MR product tankers of 47,000 dwt from China’s Jinling Shipyard; four Aframax crude oil tankers of 1,15,000 dwt capacity and two LR-II product tankers of 1,05,000 dwt from South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries; four anchor handling, towing and supply (AHTS) vessels from Indian firm Bharati Shipyard, and six handymax bulk carriers of 57,400 dwt capacity from STX Shipbuilding. October deliveryIn October, SCI is expected to receive three vessels – one VLCC of 3,19,000 dwt from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, and two 4,400 TEUs container vessels from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. Moreover, SCI is also processing a tender for acquiring four capsize vessels of 1,75,000-180,000 dwt capacity. About five-six international shipyards from countries, including China and Korea have put in their bids for the tender, said sources.
