Our Bureau

Chennai, Aug 7 Soyameal exports more than quadrupled and rapeseed meal trebled in July, as oilmeal shipments from the country doubled compared with the same period a year ago.

According to the Solvent Extractors Association, 2.82 lakh tonnes of soyameal were shipped from the country in July against 66,700 tonnes.

Rapeseed meal exports in July have been estimated at 1.54 lakh tonnes against 46,075 tonnes. Other than these, export of other oilmeals such as rice bran extraction and castormeal declined in July. Sunflower extraction exports were nil.

For the current fiscal till July, oilmeal exports increased to 18.65 lakh tonnes against 9.69 lakh tonnes during the year-ago period.

Rapeseed extraction exports for the fiscal have gone up to 3.52 lakh tonnes against 2.80 lakh tonnes, while groundnut meal shipments increased to 5,100 tonnes (4,775 tonnes).

Ricebran extraction shipments slid to 51,964 tonnes (80,085), while castormeal exports almost halved to 66,503 tonnes (1.12 lakh tonnes).

Among the importers, Vietnam bought 4.68 lakh tonnes of oilmeals compared with 3.73 lakh tonnes a year ago with soyameal accounting for 3.97 lakh tonnes. South Korea bought 2.96 lakh tonnes compared with 2.27 lakh tonnes a year ago, while Japan imported 2.20 lakh tonnes of oilmeals from the country.

Our New Delhi Bureau reports: Soyameal exports registered a 41.51 per cent growth during the ongoing 2007-08 oil year (October-September) till July.

Shipments during the period, from October 2007 to July 2008, amounted to 46.07 lakh tonnes against the corresponding 10 months of 2006-07, according to the latest data released by the Indore-based Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA) on Thursday.

“If you add the 4 lakh tonnes-plus despatched by road or rail to Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh (which are not included in the SOPA data), total exports during this season have already crossed the 50 lakh tonnes-mark,” said Mr Rajesh Agarwal, spokesperson and coordinator, SOPA.

In terms of turnover, the 46-lakh tonnes of exports are worth Rs 6,680.15 crore (excluding exports to Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh). “For the entire season, we may end up doing about 55 lakh tonnes valued at Rs 7,500 crore, which will be an all-time record,” Mr Agarwal added.

The country’s exports of soyameal stood at 41.83 lakh tonnes (Rs 3,722.87 crore) in 2005-06 and 35.26 lakh tonnes (Rs 3,619.06 crore) in 2006-07.
