Infrastructure States - Andhra Pradesh CPI stir against coastal industrial corridor in AP Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Aug. 7 The Communist Party of India (CPI) held demonstrations against the proposed coastal industrial corridor and petrochemical investment region between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada on Thursday. The protests were held at both places, in front of the offices of the district Collectors. According to a press release issued by the party on the occasion, the proposed Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Region (PCPIR) between the two port towns would be ruinous in all respects, even though “the State Government is carrying out a misinformation campaign to mislead the people.” The first casualty, according to the party, would be the food security of the State, as the coastal districts account for bulk of the rice produced in the State. “Of the 96 lakh tonnes of rice produced in the State, the coastal districts account for 67 lakh tonnes and therefore, the coast is very crucial. Besides paddy, the nine districts grow several commercial crops and they will all be at risk as the State Government has decided to acquire 1.5 lakh acres between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in the first phase and ultimately five lakh acres in the nine districts,” alleges the party. ‘Blow to fisheries’The corridor will lead to large-scale displacement of fishermen. They will be denied access to the sea and the chemical industries will pollute sea waters, the release said. “The coastal corridor will imperil the livelihood of 80 lakh fishermen, 25 lakh Dalits and other vulnerable sections. Therefore, the State should immediately give up the proposal,” the CPI said. More Stories on : Infrastructure | Environment | Politics | Andhra Pradesh
