Tiruchi ban on plastics

Tiruchi, Aug. 7

The Tiruchi Corporation would soon enforce the ban on the production and use of plastics below 20 microns in thickness in the city after carrying out an awareness campaign. Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman, in an informal discussion with representatives of service organisations on Thursday, said that the ban would apply to plastic bags, cups/tumblers and plastic coated plates. The corporation has decided to levy a fine on consumers using plastic products, retail and wholesale tr aders and manufacturers of plastics. Violation of the ban would attract penalties at the following rates: Rs 5,000 for manufacturers; Rs 2,500 for wholesale traders, Rs 750 for retailers and Rs 100 for consumers. —
