Emerging markets to boost mobile sales: Gartner

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Aug. 7 Worldwide sales of mobile phones are expected to rise by about 11 per cent to 1.28 billion units in 2008, riding on the back of increased demand in emerging countries.

In Asia-Pacific, mobile phone sales are forecast to surge by 17.9 per cent to 472.5 million units in 2008, according to Gartner. Sales in North America will increase by 5.3 per cent to 185.7 million.

Worldwide mobile phone sales in the first quarter of 2008 reached 294.3 million. Gartner expects sales in the second quarter of 2008 to be between 300 million and 305 million units.

“In the second half of the year, we expect sales in the third quarter to be more than the second quarter results but only moderately as Motorola and LG issued warnings for a sequential drop in sales as well as an economic environment that remains challenging,” said Ms Carolina Milanesi, the Research Director for mobile devices at Gartner.
