Power States - Kerala KSERC plea to cut power consumption Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 7 The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has called upon all categories of consumers to restrict use of electricity in view of the severe power crisis in the State. The call comes in the wake of the petition filed by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) before the commission with a slew of suggestions, including imposition of a surcharge ranging from 40 to 70 per cent even on domestic consumers, to overcome the crisis. The commission, in a statement, pointed out that the proposed surcharge will put a heavy burden on domestic consumers, commercial establishments and industries. In order to overcome the crisis to an extent as also to help it take a decision on the board’s suggestions, the commission has asked the consumers to bring down the use of electricity through a series of measures. GuidelinesThese include totally avoiding illuminations; use of CFL and LED lamps to the extent possible; and switching off appliances like water heater, air-conditioner, refrigerator, water pump and electric iron between 6 pm and 11 pm. The commission also wants workshops, flour mills and welding shops not to use electricity between 6 pm. and 11 pm. Finally, all the consumers, including domestic consumers, government offices and public sector undertakings, should reduce power consumption by 25 per cent, it says. More Stories on : Power | Kerala
