SAIL's record loading of imported coal

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Aug. 8

The month of July proved to be significant for Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in matter of loading imported coal in three east coast ports of Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia. During the month, as many as 319 rakes were loaded, surpassing the target of 302 rakes set for the month and the previous best of 291 rakes.

The performance of Visakhapatnam port was best with a loading record of as many as 144 rakes (against programme of 126 rakes), followed by Paradip, 37 (35) and Haldia 138 (141).

The shortfall in loading at Haldia from the programme was due to the restriction imposed by the South Eastern Railway on movement of coal rakes to Rourkela steel plant in view of high wagon balance in the plant.

Visakhapatnam port, according to informed sources, can also take credit for achieving record daily loading of eight rakes of imported coal on SAIL account against the normal four rakes a day on an average.

The sources would attribute it to perfect harmony achieved in the functioning of all agencies concerned - the port allowed loading at as many as four points, the East Coast Railway placed adequate number of rakes for loading and, capping it all, there was no dearth of coal at the ports. In other words, SAIL ensured timely arrivals of imports at all the three ports.

For August, the programme is to load 302 rakes, to be distributed over three ports in the proportion of Visakhapatnam 135, Paradip 41 and Haldia 126. The trend so far suggests that the achievement on pro-rata basis has been more than 100 per cent.
