Tea prices rise at Kochi auction

Kochi, Aug 8 Despite the token presence and subdued activity of exporters and interstate buyers, prices of both leaf and dust tea firmed up handsomely at the Kochi Tea Auction. Major blenders were fairly active on smaller and finer CTC dust grades. Interstate buyers concentrated mainly on bolder CTC dust grades while exporters were even less active and operated on bolder CTC dust grades.

There was 8,60,000 kg of dust tea which elicited good general demand. CTC finer and grainier grades closed higher by Rs 3-5 a kg. Bolder CTC varieties were up by one rupee. Orthodox dust was dearer by Rs 4, while medium orthodox was dearer by Rs 2-5 a kg. Secondaries were also dearer by Rs 2-5 a kg. Best CTC grades quoted Rs 80-90, medium CTC fetched Rs 75-80 and below medium was at Rs 70-76. High grown BOPD was at Rs 122, medium BOPD realised Rs 63-65 and secondaries quoted Rs 58-60.

Leaf Sale

There was 3,26,000 kg of leaf tea on offer. High grown bolder broken teas were firm to dearer by Rs 2-3 a kg. Fannings also quoted higher. Both whole leaf grades and smaller broken were dearer. Medium broken and fannings were up by Rs 2-3 a kg. CTC prices were generally up by Rs 2-3 a kg while medium CTC moved up even higher. Best Nilgiri varieties quoted Rs 95-120 a kg, medium orthodox was at Rs 70-99 a kg and plain orthodox fetched Rs 63-68 a kg. Best CTC leaf quoted Rs 72-80 a kg and medium CTC leaf ranged at Rs 63-70 a kg.

Top Price

In the dust segment, Kodanad BOPD fetched the top price at Rs 122, Pasuparai FD fetched Rs 110, Pasuparai SFD Rs 97 and Kallayar SFD was at Rs 88. In the leaf segment Glendale CLOP quoted the top price at Rs 147 followed by Sutton OP at Rs 142, Havukal FOP at Rs 142 and Chamraj FOP at Rs 140.
