Cultivation States - Andhra Pradesh Watershed programme shields against drought Our Bureau Hyderabad, Aug. 8 Farmers in several parts of the country were a worried lot till a few days ago with monsoons playing truant. But for the late showers that saved the day, the farmers would have faced a tough time. As their peers in other rain-fed areas longed for rains till last week, farmers in Kothapally village of Ranga Reddy district in Andhra Pradesh were not that bothered as they had plenty of water in their wells. A group of agencies, including International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) and non-governmental organisations, helped the farmers evolve a strategy well in advance to tackle drought situation. And this strategy had been helping the farmers in the village for the last nine years, an Icrisat press release said. “The community watershed at Kothapally has become a model replicated in many other sites in India, China, Thailand and Vietnam, and now in East and Central Africa,” Dr William Dar, Director-General, Icrisat, said. Dr S.P. Wani, Icrisat’s principal scientist on watersheds, said, “Once we found solutions for immediate problems, the farmers became our ambassadors for implementing these interventions.” More Stories on : Cultivation | Agricultural Institutions | Andhra Pradesh
