Hardware High-performance computers selling well, says HP V. Rishi Kumar Hyderabad, Aug. 8 Technology major Hewlett-Packard (HP) today said Indian enterprises across segments such as financial services, oil and gas, gaming and technology are developing data centres with high-performance computers (HPCs). The sales of high-performance computers in these segments reflects that HPCs have far outpaced growth of general servers, according to Mr. Faisal M. Paul, Country Manager, HPC, HP India. Speaking to Business Line over a conference call, Mr. Paul said with the country’s economy witnessing growth, the demand to handle large volumes of data has increased. This has meant enterprises handling large amounts of customer information. HPCs help enterprises manage large volumes of computational data and visualisation requirements. Referring to Tata research labs, Mr. Paul said HP was instrumental in setting up one of the world’s fastest supercomputer for various research initiatives there. SOFTWARE AS A SERVICEHP works with seven major banks in the country — including Bank of Baroda, Bank of India and UCO Bank — managing their data centres. “We are also looking at offering software as a service to small- and medium-sized enterprises,” he said. With improved telecom infrastructure, software as a service is well positioned to make a difference to enterprises offering services on demand, Mr. Paul added. HP invested about $3.5 billion in R&D last year and some of the work was related to HPC. The focus is on using less wires in data centres with emphasis on power saving, he said.
