Climate & Weather Industry & Economy - Natural Calamities States - Andhra Pradesh Rain wreaks havoc in AP, Met office warns of more Our Bureau Hyderabad, Aug. 9 Incessant rain in the last 24 hours in Andhra Pradesh has caused widespread damage to life and property across the State. According to the Meteorological Department, widespread rainfall is likely over Orissa and coastal Andhra Pradesh in the next 24 hours and over Telangana and South Chhattisgarh during the next two to three days. Officials said scores of people died in flash floods and houses collapsed during the past 24 hours due to the heavy rain in the State. The rain also led to inundation of low-lying areas and threw traffic out of gear. Since Friday night, Hyderabad received a record rainfall of 13.6 cm. The rain, triggered by depression over the Bay of Bengal, led to flash floods as several rivulets, streams and tanks were overflowing. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Saturday held a review meeting with officials concerned and directed them to take all necessary steps. He announced Rs 50,000 from the Government and another Rs 50,000 under the Apathbandhu scheme as ex-gratia to the next of kin of those killed due to the heavy rain. As part of the relief operations, District Collectors have been asked to carefully monitor the flood situation and all officers on leave have been asked to report to work. Control rooms at district and mandal levels will be open round the clock. Relief camps will be opened in affected areas as per requirements, officials said.
