Infrastructure CII stresses need to speed up infrastructure projects CII has said the Govt should release a status report on project implementation, giving the reasons for delays. Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug 10 With the global economy slowing down, the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) considers infrastructure development as the key to sustain the growth momentum in the domestic economy. The CII opines that robust infrastructure development would keep the demand high and with larger capacity creation, the supply side bottlenecks would also be taken care of. To speed up the infrastructure development in the country, CII has recommended measures such as appointing of a special representative for getting clearances and approvals and for monitoring the implementation of key infrastructure projects across the Ministries and State Governments concerned. With $500 billion allocated by the Planning Commission as a part of the 11th Plan towards infrastructure development, CII has said that the Government should release a status report on project implementation, giving the reasons for delays. This could in turn facilitate measures that can lead to faster implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects. For instance, the chamber cited the implementation of National Highway Development Programme has been slow due to various issues. “A uniform technology should be put in place to ensure one time collection of toll at one point to allow free movement of truckers across States to ensure speedy movement and avoid unnecessary delays at tollgates and check points,” the Chambers said in a statement. The apex industry chamber also sought corporatisation of major ports to help them operate on commercial lines through greater autonomy and flexibility in decision-making, private sector partnership in setting up nuclear power plants, encouragement of similar partnerships in implementing Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission to cater to the needs of the growing population pressures in cities and towns amongst others.
