Eradicating poverty

The editorial “Food for thought” has correctly underlined the urgent need for reforming the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the country to eradicate poverty (Business Line, August 8).

One feels that unless we do the basic things right (say, making an earnest effort to have accurate data of people living below the poverty line in the country, distributing the BPL cards to all of them and so on), all other measures (for instance, various on-going rural employment programmes such as the Integrated Rural Development Programme, Rural landless and Employment Guarantee Programme, and so on) to reduce the people living below the poverty line, are of no avail.
