Infrastructure Government - Shopping States - Other States Puducherry Govt mulls Special Education Zone R. Ravikumar Puducherry, Aug 10 The Puducherry Government is planning to set up a ‘Special Education Zone’ to promote the Union Territory as an education hub. The Government has acquired around 300 acres at Karaikal, where the proposed special education zone is likely to come up. “The Government is considering the public private partnership mode to create all necessary infrastructure there,” said the Puducherry Education Minister, Mr M.O.H.F. Shahjahan. Speaking on the sidelines of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Southern Region meet here on Saturday, the Minister said the Government, in association with the CII and other academicians, is setting up a task force on education to improve the education system in the union territory. Curricula upgradationThe Government has decided to remove all obsolete courses from ITI and polytechnic institutes and planning to introduce more career-oriented curricula instead. Besides, it is also talking with the Singapore Government for establishing technical institutes here, he said. “We are also planning to establish an international language centre which will teach apart from English German, French and Japanese.” Besides, Puducherry is all set to get an NIT (National Institute of Technology) very soon. The Centre has agreed to set up National Information Technology here, and has asked us to provide 300 acres of land for the same. “As per the agreement, 50 per cent of the total seats are to be reserved for students from the Union Territory,” said Mr Shahjahan. According to Mr Sriram Subramanya, Chairman, CII, Puducherry and Founder Chairman of Integra Software Services Pvt Ltd, CII may suggest the Government to invite a leading French B-school, Insead, to set up shop here.
