Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 11 The Kerala branch of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics and medical technology company BD (Becton, Dickinson and Co) have signed an MoU to offer training programmes in ‘safe injection practices’ for medical students in the State.

Under the agreement, the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, with the support of the State Government and BD, will provide training to 1,500 medical students in Kerala every year.

The initiative will cover both government-run and private medical colleges. The first training programme will be held at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

According to a press release issued by BD, the training programme is based on the recommendations of the national workshop on safe injection practices held in New Delhi in 2004.

The programme includes a five-module presentation and a mandatory two-week assignment in hospital injection rooms for trainees, the release adds.

The training programme is the first step in the ‘Safe I Initiative’, the release says. This initiative will help the Indian Academy of Paediatrics certify that hospitals in the State have undergone safety training and evaluate their adherence to the safety guidelines developed by the academy and BD.
