Letters Meaningful Independence On the 61st Independence Day celebrations, what can we ordinary citizens do to develop the nation socially, economically and politically? The following come to my mind: We must develop a sense of interdependence to make the hard-won freedom meaningful. We (teachers, industrialists, politicians, bankers, shopkeepers, hawkers, barbers, etc) constitute the society. We depend on each other and cannot grow in isolation. We must be conscious of wastage of resource. We must make it a point not to waste water, food or any resource any time anywhere. We must strive to do our duties in the best possible manner. Educated youth who are capable of becoming good entrepreneurs must provide employment to others. We must imbibe the principle ‘Each one, teach one’ and effectively carry it out to eradicate illiteracy. We must be true to ourselves and to the people around us in all walks of life. S.
