Farm research

The news article ‘Outlay on farm research scant, says RBI study’ (Business Line, August 14), is a commentary on our inadequate response to the sector which feeds us. Our research focuses on large investment and the returns and does not take into consideration the shrinking size of landholdings due to expansion and breaking up of families.

In most cases farm credit is not the constraint but farmers’ inability to service and repay the loan arising out of the investment made by taking the loans.

In the circumstances, the Government and companies which depend on agricultural produce as raw materials should invest in research, focusing on increasing the productivity in small farms.
