Area under soyabean increases 5%

Our Bureau

Chennai, Aug 14 The area under soyabean this year has increased by five per cent to 92.67 lakh hectares (lh) compared with last year’s coverage.

According to the Soyabean Processors Association of India, barring a few pockets, the area under soyabean has increased in almost all the growing areas. Taking into consideration the 77.16 lh of area brought under soyabean in 2007, there has been a 20 per cent increase in the oilseeds coverage during the last two years.

The association’s spokesperson and coordinator, Mr Rajesh Agrawal, said in a statement that in Madhya Pradesh, there has been a marginal increase in the coverage in Ujjain, Indore, Bhopal, Guna, Shivpuri and Ashoknagar districts.

Coverage of soyabean in the State had increased to 51.43 lh against a targeted 47.75 lh and germination of the crop has been good after it sustained the drought spell.

Germination good

“The germination in the early sown crop was good and the crop is showing good growth. Minor incidence of pest was reported due to cloudy weather but it was controlled,” Mr Agrawal said. Sowing has been more or less completed in that State.

In Maharashtra, soyabean has been sown in 27.44 lh (22.85 lh) and germination in crop sown early in some areas was good. While the early sown crop had entered flowering phase, the condition of late sown crop was good.

In Rajasthan, 8.49 lh have been brought under soyabean, while in Andhra Pradesh, 1.25 lh are under the crop (1.07 lh).

PTI reports: Meanwhile, vegetable oil imports declined marginally in July to 5.32 lakh tonnes (lt) compared with the same month a year ago, the Solvent Extractors’ Association (SEA) said in a statement. Imports in July last totalled 5.4 lt.
