Costlier fuel, fruits drive up inflation rate to 12.44%

Prices increased for light diesel oil (16%), bitumen & furnace oil (8% each), aviation turbine fuel (3%).

Rates dropped for imported vegoils (13%), rice bran oil (5%), gingelly oil & cotton seed oil (2%).

New Delhi, Aug 14 The annual Wholesale Price Index-based inflation rose 12.44 per cent during the week ended August 2, above the previous week’s annual rise of 12.01 per cent, government data showed on Thursday.

During the latest reported week, the WPI moved up to 240.4 points from 239.6 points during the previous reported week. The annual rate of inflation stood at 4.39 per cent during the corresponding week a year ago.

Maize dearer

On a disaggregated basis, the Primary Articles group index rose by 0.6 per cent as the index for the ‘Food Articles’ group rose by 0.9 per cent due to higher prices of maize (4 per cent), moong, condiments and spices and urad (3 per cent each), fruits and vegetables, jowar and fish-marine (2 per cent each) and masur, tea, bajra and arhar (1 per cent each).

Rubber costly

The index for ‘Non-Food Articles’ group rose by 0.2 per cent due to higher prices of raw rubber (5 per cent) and raw tobacco, linseed and cotton seed (1 per cent each). However, the prices of gingelly seed (3 per cent) and raw wool (1 per cent) declined.

The Fuel, power, light and lubricants group index rose 0.9 per cent due to higher prices of light diesel oil (16 per cent), bitumen and furnace oil (8 per cent each) and aviation turbine fuel (3 per cent). However, the prices of naphtha (2 per cent) declined.

Edible oils cheaper

The Heavyweight Manufactured Products group index declined by 0.05 per cent as the index for ‘Food Products’ group dipped by 0.5 per cent due to lower prices of imported edible oil (13 per cent), rice bran oil (5 per cent), gingelly oil and cotton seed oil (2 per cent each) and oilcakes, groundnut oil and rape and mustard oil (1 per cent each). The index for ‘Textiles’ group rose by 0.1 per cent due to higher prices of hessian and sacking bags (3 per cent) and hessian cloth (2 per cent).

PVC cables up

However, the prices of woollen cloth (1 per cent) declined. The index for ‘Rubber and Plastic Products’ group rose by 0.3 per cent due to higher prices of decorative laminates (13 per cent). The index for ‘Chemicals and Chemical Products’ group rose marginally due to higher prices of bopp film (12 per cent). The index for ‘Machinery and Machine Tools’ group rose by 0.2 per cent due to higher prices of P.V.C insulated cables (4 per cent).

The final WPI for the week ended June 7 was revised upwards and the annual rate of inflation based on final index, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 11.66 per cent as compared to 11.05 per cent points reported provisionally.
