11 dead as school bus falls into river

Mangalore, Aug. 14 As many as 11 persons, including seven children, were killed when a school bus fell into the Phalguni river at Ullaibettu near Gurupur village in Mangalore taluk on Thursday morning.

Eyewitnesses said that the driver of the school bus tried to avoid a pit at the beginning of the bridge.

In the process, he lost control over the bus and the vehicle fell into the river near the bridge. The river was in spate due to heavy rainfall in the region for the past several days.

It is said that the bus was carrying around 31-33 people, including elders.

The State Home Minister, Dr V.S. Acharya, who visited the accident spot, said that the Government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each for the families of the dead. Those injured will be given free treatment, he said.

Dr Acharya said that of the seven children killed, three were boys and four girls.
