Nod for leather development scheme

New Delhi, Aug 14

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the much-awaited proposal for implementing the Rs 913-crore “Indian Leather Development Programme” in the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12). The scheme, entailing an outlay of Rs 912.67 crore, would lead to development of infrastructure for the sector, besides addressing environmental concerns specific to the sector. The scheme would also facilitate additional investment, employment generation and augmentation of production fo r domestic and export markets. The Minister of State for Commerce and Power, Mr Jairam Ramesh, told Business Line that though one and a half year of the 11th Plan is getting over, this scheme is important in that it would ensure geographic distribution of the industry in other parts of the country. He said Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal would benefit by it.
