Our Bureau

Kochi, Aug. 15 Yachting Association of India, the governing authority for sailing in India, will extend technical support to Volvo Ocean Race India Stopover, scheduled to be held in Kochi during December.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Consortium of Cochin Port Trust and Kerala Tourism, the organizers of Volvo Ocean Race India Stopover, and Yachting Association in this regard.

The Yachting Association will be giving all technical and marine related support to the stopover event.

The Association, an active advocate of the race coming to India, sees the hosting of the stopover as a key component in India’s ongoing campaign to establish itself as a venue for hosting major sporting events following its successful bid to stage the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, a release issued here said.

Getting ready

The port is getting ready to host the mega event of the year, which is scheduled to stopover in India for 10 days from December 3 to 13.

Kochi city will witness a 10-day visual extravaganza of the most exciting water sport action that India has ever witnessed.

The event would also attract hundreds of other luxury yachts and sailing vessels of different depictions to Kochi, making the event truly spectacular.

As India is poised to host major global sporting events like the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and preparing to bid for the Olympic Games in the near future, the hosting of a major global water sporting events like the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in a well-developed hub like Kochi will give a big boost to the development of sports and tourism in the region, the release said. With the arrival of Volvo Ocean Race, Kochi, the most preferred Indian port of call for all major international luxury cruise vessels, will become an international sailing hub.

Kochi had the highest number of cruise vessels in the country, with 43 vessels calling during 2007-2008 and four international cruise vessels scheduled to visit the port during the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover event.
