Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Aug. 15 Hindusthan Shipyard Ltd here is on the revival path and has achieved a turnover of Rs. 510 crore during 2007-08, but it is necessary for the staff to strive hard to compete with other shipyards and maintain the momentum gained in recent times, according to Commodore. Naresh Kumar, the Director (Technical).

At the Independence Day function in HSL on Friday, he remarked that “though HSL is an old shipyard with an aged workforce, it is necessary for the young and old alike to contribute to the betterment of the yard.”

He said HSL was investing on a significant scale in acquiring new equipment and tools for modernisation and upgradation.

16 ships on order

“We have 16 ships on hand on order, of which two are ready for delivery to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration. Modernisation of submarine underway is a strategic project for HSL and more such orders will follow after its completion. We have orders worth Rs 1,600 crore on hand,” he said.

Commodore Naresh Kumar said the company had delivered three 30,000 DWT ships and the last one was the slipway to be delivered by March 2009.

The first ship of 53,000 DWT would be ready for floating by November. These ships were being built for Goodearth Maritime Ltd, Chennai. “We have also cleared the backlog of old ship orders and delivered the 700-passenger vessel to the Lakshadweep Administration,” he said.

Ship repairs

The turnover on ship repairs had gone up to a record Rs 120 crore during 2007-08 and “this year we have completed repairs to two foreign rigs. We have secured the largest ship repair order for Sagar Ratna worth Rs 388 crore, to be completed in two years.”

He said there was a need to concentrate on vendor development and faster procurement systems and enthuse contractors to produce more for faster delivery of ships.
