New Products & Services Now, your PC is an alarm clock! Anand Parthasarathy Bangalore, Aug. 15 What is the biggest hassle faced by PC or laptop owners who use software harnessing the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology to make long distance telephone calls from their machines? It is having to leave the PC ‘on’ all day - or miss incoming calls of the Skype or Google Talk type. That may no longer be necessary. A new chip set announced by Intel on Friday, enables a ‘sleeping’ PC to walk to life when it receives an incoming call -- and then wake you up to take it. It is called Remote Wake-up and it works by sending a packet of instructions that wakes up a PC from hibernation. It works with most common PC operating systems. Intel has chosen not to make a big thing about the new technology, leaving it to 3 or 4 partner companies who offer Net telephony products. However, the Web is alive with the sound of analysts predicting that this could soon morph into a technology that works in reverse: that is, a PC owner any where in the world could wake up a home or office machine remotely, ask it to show what e-mails have been received, and then ask it to shut off again. The technology release comes just a week before Intel’s annual tech Developer Forum in San Francisco, when more details can be expected. More Stories on : New Products & Services | Hardware
