Outlook TNPL expanding branded products range During the current year, the company expects to produce about 55,000 tonnes of copier paper The company now has started focussing more on the branded notebooks segment R. Balaji Chennai, Aug. 16 Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd is expanding the output of branded products to exploit the better margins and the growing market. According to company officials, it is increasing the output of branded copiers, introducing a new line of packaged papers — double folio examination papers — and doubling the output of its branded notebooks during the current year. TNPL’s copier paper output has grown at a compounded average rate of about 20 per cent in the last five years. During the current year, the company expects to produce about 55,000 tonnes of copier paper against 50,000 tonnes in 2007-08. The copier papers segment is among the fastest growing in the industry and TNPL’s output has grown to the present level from about 19,000 tonnes in 2002-03. TNPL is now among the top three in the branded copier segment in the country. Latest OfferingThe latest in the branded papers segment is the Eezee Write, the ready-to-use academy size, cut packed, and promoted as an ideal option for writing. Its other brands in the paper segment are Copy Crown, super bright office paper, and TNPL Copier, an international standard copier paper. NotebooksApart from the branded copiers, TNPL also makes branded notebooks. The company has maintained a low key presence in this line but now has started focussing more on this product line. Branded notebooks are gaining increased acceptance in the market because of quality and standardisation, officials said. Industry estimates peg the notebook market at about Rs 3,500 crore, growing at about 20 per cent, dominated by the unbranded and unorganised sector. About one-fifth of this market has been cornered by less than a handful of branded notebook makers. TNPL is more than doubling its output of notebooks this year to about 2,500 tonnes against 1,000 tonnes last year. The company has tied up with eight notebook converters who will use TNPL papers to produce notebooks under the TNPL brand. It will use the widely accepted TNPL paper – Radiant Paper – in the notebooks. TNPL will also offer customised products for companies and other bulk buyers, officials said. The company hopes to duplicate its success in the branded copier segment with its notebook range to be among the top players in the branded notebook market in the coming years.
