New Projects Polycab Wires plans greenfield facility in Daman T. Murrali Chennai, Aug. 16 The Mumbai-headquartered Polycab Wires Private Ltd plans to set up a greenfield facility in Daman for its joint venture with the French company Nexans to make specialty cables. The company is also setting up a plant in Gujarat to make power energy cables. The Rs 2,750-crore Polycab Wires has 10 plants in Daman, manufacturing a range of cables from 1.1 KV up to 33 KV capacity and catering to several industrial segments besides State electricity boards. Niche segmentsMr Anil Saraf, Vice-President of the company, told Business Line that Polycab recently signed an MoU with the French cable major Nexans and floated a new company, Nexans Polycab Private Ltd, to make specialty cables. Though the modalities are yet to be worked out, he said Nexans Polycab would invest around Rs 300 crore in the proposed plant in two phases. During the first phase, it would make specialty cables targeting niche segments that are currently being catered to by imports. In the second phase, it would make extra-high voltage cables for the domestic market as well as exports. Polycab Wires is constructing a plant in Vadodara to manufacture power energy cables and conductors. In the first phase, it is investing Rs 120 crore, which would enable it to manufacture power energy cables in 110, 132 and 220 KV capacities. Besides, it would also manufacture aluminium conductor steel reinforced and all alloy aluminium conductors. The plant would be up and running in less than two years, he added. During the second phase, which would be taken up in 2010, it would manufacture higher capacity cables based on the market demand, he said. This would enable it to offer turnkey solutions to SEBs, especially in connecting sub-stations. More Stories on : New Projects | Electrical Goods
