Effluent treatment plant near Tiruchi

R. Krishnamoorthy

Tiruchi, Aug. 17 The Local Administration Minister, Mr M.K. Stalin, commissioned the Rs 2.8-crore Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Tiruvalarchipatti near here on Sunday.

The commissioning of the CETP has addressed the apprehension of the local people about groundwater contamination caused by effluent discharges from leather industries in Sembattu on the city outskirts.

The Centre had granted an investment subsidy of Rs 27 lakh for the project. The CETP will cater to eight tanneries that process 18 tonnes of skins and hides a day.

The Secretary of the Tiruchi Tanners’ Association (TTA), Mr V.S.M. Varis Mohideen, said the tanneries in the district were adopting East India Leather Technology process, using vegetable extracts for processing raw skins and hides.

The Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Mr S. Regupathy; the State Minister for Environment, Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr T.P.M. Mohideen Khan, the State Transport Minister, Mr K.N. Nehru; the State Forests Minister, Mr N. Selvaraj, and the District Collector, Mr T. Soundiah, were present.
