Railways States - Tamil Nadu Five new rail link schemes for Tamil Nadu: Velu Our Bureau Mayiladuturai, Aug. 18 The Railways had sent proposals for providing five new rail link schemes in Tamil Nadu to the Planning Commission for its approval, said Mr R. Velu, Minister of State for Railways, here on Sunday. The proposals submitted were Needamangalam-Pattukottai, Tiruvannamalai-Jolarpet, Dindigul-Kumuli, Ariyalur-Thanjavur and Morapur-Dharmapuri, he said. Mr Velu was speaking at a function to flag-off the extended Mayiladuturai-Coimbatore Jan Shatabdi express train here. According to the Minister, the Railways had invested more than Rs 5,000 crore in the last four years in Tamil Nadu for various railway projects, modernisation, laying of new lines, etc. Mr Velu pointed out that the Mayiladuturai-Villupuram broad gauge conversion work would be completed by January next year and the trains would then be operated on this main line section from Tiruchi to Chennai. The Nagore-Tiruvarur broad gauge conversion work was over and trains would be operated in one or two months after getting the clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. The electrification of the Villupuram-Tiruchi chord line section will be completed in two months and the electrification of Tiruchi-Madurai section will be taken up afterwards, he said. Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj and Development of North Eastern Region, who flagged-off the train, thanked the Railway Minister for his efforts in developing Mayiladuturai.
