Strike in SBI Bengal circle

Kolkata, Aug 18

Close to 5,000 employees working in 840 branches of the Bengal Circle of State Bank of India joined the one-day nationwide strike to oppose the merger of State Bank of Saurashtra with SBI.

The All-India State Bank Officers' Federation, with over 80,000 members working in more than 15,000 branches had announced the strike to protest the merger of associate banks with SBI.

The associate banks were established with a specific objective of providing credit facilities to the interior parts of princely states and the merger is bound to affect the existing branch network in rural areas, said a press release.

The Federation also demands the extension of superannuation scheme available to SBI for the officers working in associate banks as well. "In the event of management failing to take note of the sentiments, the Federation will be compelled to call for an indefinite strike during September 2008," the release said. - Our Bureau
