Letters Insurance cover This is with reference to the article “Gaps in insurance cover for parents” (Business Line, August 16). The premium for mediclaim policies is high; this has been on the rise over the years. Considering that there has been a huge increase in the consultation fee for specialists (anywhere between Rs 300 and Rs 600), price of medicines and, generally, the overall cost of hospitalisation, there is a case for rationalisation of costs and tariff, apart from the legislations suggested in the article. I often wonder how many poor and middle-class citizens of the country would be able to take care of their health concerns reasonably well, given the ever-increasing cost of medical care. Further, it is no exaggeration that senior citizens are discouraged from taking mediclaim policies by many a public sector insurance company, which keep highlighting how the claims may not be accepted under certain circumstances. However, I recently came across three cases where the claims were met in the normal course. It is time the Regulatory Authority came out with a strong publicity campaign detailing the immense benefits available to the senior citizens under mediclaim, the eligibility criteria, and so on, so that the government’s intentions are not defeated.
