Coonoor, Aug. 19 Producers who sold their teas through the 31 auctions conducted by Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) in the first half of this year received Rs 82.25 crore more than in the same period last year.

An analysis of the market reports shows that this happened because a higher volume was sold for a higher price. In all, 3.02 crore kgs were sold against 1.99 crore kgs. On an average, every kg fetched Rs 11.48 more, amounting to Rs 57.68.

Consequently, the overall earnings rose to Rs 174.19 crore (Rs 91.94 crore), marking an increase of 89.46 per cent.

Prices of orthodox teas rose by Rs 4 a kg to average at Rs 61.02. A volume of 2.04 million kgs was sold, against 1.76 million kgs last year. Prices of CTC teas rose by Rs 12 a kg to average Rs 57.44. A volume of 2.82 crore kgs (1.82 crore kgs) was sold.

Currently, prices average Rs 69.86 a kg, as much as Rs 30 more than the average fetched this time last year.
