Mumbai restaurants plan blackouts

Shubhra Tandon

Mumbai, Aug 19 Rising costs, especially of electricity, have forced small and mid-market hotels in Mumbai to take some stern measures. All 8,000 small hotels under the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association will switch off exterior lights of their establishments on every Monday and Thursday as a mark of protest against the increase in electricity tariff.

According to the Mumbai-based association, also known as AHAR, there has been an increase of 15 to 25 per cent in the electricity tariff from June 1, 2008 by Reliance Energy. Other suppliers BEST, MSEDCL and Tata have also increased rates in the last few months.

“The hike has resulted in 65 per cent to 95 per cent increase in the electricity bills of restaurants in the suburban area where Reliance is the main supplier,” said Mr Chandrahas K. Shetty, AHAR President.
