Lorries fined for overloading

Mangalore, Aug. 19

As many as 220 lorries carrying iron ore cargo to New Mangalore Port have been fined since November 2007 for overloading.

A press release from the office of the Regional Transport Officer here said that the office imposed a fine of Rs 15,75,380 on these lorries under the Motor Vehicles Act, for overloading.

Added to this, the office has registered 52 cases against lorries coming through RORO (roll-on roll-off) service of the railways. These lorries were also found overloaded, it said.

The district administration is contemplating to ban the movement of iron ore lorries in the Mangalore City Corporation limits during daytime and on Shirady Ghat stretch on National Highway 48 during the night period, the release added. - Our Bureau
