Curb likely in egg production

Gayathri G

Chennai, Aug 20 Plagued by rising input costs, producers in the poultry hub of Namakkal are likely to curb production.

Industry sources told Business Line that poultry farmers need to curtail egg production, lest they would be faced with severe loss. “We expect the production to come down by 15-20 per cent so that the price of egg could be increased to Rs 2.25. Only then the industry can sustain,” he said.

The National Egg Coordination Committee branch of Namakkal at its weekly price fixing meeting on Monday increased the farmgate price of an egg to an all-time high of Rs 2 a piece. The guideline selling price of an egg stood at Rs 2.01 on Monday (August 18), when the bi-weekly rates were announced by the apex body for poultry trade.

NECC will be holding a rate-fixation meeting on Thursday and the prices are most likely to kept at the current rate of Rs 2.01 a piece. With the rise in farm gate price, the retail price eggs is expected to hover in the range of Rs 2.25-2.50 a piece.

An NECC spokesperson said though the current price of eggs in the retail market may be perceived by consumers to be high, poultry farmers were losing more money now compared with last year owing to steep increase in maize prices.

The production cost per egg is Rs 2.10. Since the cost of feed ingredients such as soya and maize has increased twice as much than previous year, production costs have also increased. According to NECC, maize cost is Rs 1,300 a quintal as against last year’s Rs 600 a quintal. Similarly, soya costs around Rs 24,000 a tonne, while it was only Rs 13,000 last year.

Namakkal produces an average 2.5 crore egg units a day.
