More tourist-friendly autos

Tiruchi, Aug. 20

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Department would extend the tourist-friendly autorickshaw scheme to major tourist centres across the State, the Tourism Secretary, Mr V. Irai Anbu, said here on Tuesday. The scheme, in vogue in Chennai, would be introduced shortly in Kanyakumari. Autorickshaw drivers are issued photo identity cards after verifying their antecedents and they charge as per the fare meter. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an orientation programme here, Mr Anbu said the scheme would be extended to Madurai and Tiruchi. He said the department was taking steps to promote lesser-known tourist destinations such as Yelagiri, Yercaud, Hogenakkal, Pulicat and Kolli Hills. —
