Opinion - Letters
A futile effort?

It is unfortunate that the high-powered committee which went into the financial position of oil companies has met with opposition. The panel, headed by Planning Commission member B. K. Chaturvedi, had suggested far-reaching proposals for the pricing of petroleum products.

Its suggestion of a monthly hike in the retail prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.50 and 0.75 paise respectively for specified periods has become the focal point of the opposition to the report.

In fact, the panel has laid out a clear roadmap for the pricing of petroleum products. But politically, the Government seems to be finding it difficult to implement the suggestions.

The Government should show courage and confidence while appointing panels to go into any economic or social issue. And it should boldly implement the feasible and viable suggestions.

Fuel subsidy

India is facing a crucial issue on the pricing of diesel today. There is no purpose served in supplying subsidised diesel to private cars, taxis, SUVs, MUVs and large cars under the luxury segment. Diesel should be supplied to these categories at market prices.

Subsidy on fuel should be extended only to the poor, the public and private transport (heavy vehicles) used for movement of passengers, goods and services, the railways and vans with a carrying capacity of more than 15 persons.
